Daniel Hayes is an architect who listens. He drove down from Asheville with a hospital expansion fully drawn and a basset hound named Gus asleep in the passenger seat—and walked straight into Isla Bennett, the town's historic preservation director, who knows the 1924 limestone building better than the men who own the blueprints.
